Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning

Warhammer Beta Sign-ups Breach 500,000

According to this press release, Warhammer Online's beta sign-ups have breached the 500,000 barrier, making it quite possibly the most anticipated MMORPG to-date.

World of Warcraft eventually had to shut down their Open Beta sign-up process due to demand, but never had this many players eager to get into the game this early on in the beta. With the beta's next phase coming soon, meaning the re-opening of the Closed Beta, does this mean that more players will be allowed in?

Of these 500,000 sign-ups, how many will wait patiently until launch in Q2 2008, if they don't get in? I suppose only time will tell -- it'll certainly be interesting to watch what Warhammer brings to the genre when it finally launches. As of now, though, it's obviously the most anticipated MMO of this year, and initial sales may even rival those of World of Warcraft.

What are your thoughts? Do you think this game will have what it takes to challenge the juggernaught?

Dark Age of Camelot was my first MMORPG that I played for more than a week. I tried out Ultima Online, Everquest and even Asheron's Call, but Dark Age of Camelot was the first one that I ended up playing for almost 3 years.
I canceled and resubscribed several times during this time. Eventually canceling for good, never even hitting the level cap (battlegrounds are what kept me coming back).
Although at the time I disagreed with a lot of what Mythic was doing with the game, even then I could see how well of a development team they had. Patches came quickly and VERY RARELY did they cause any issues. Downtime was very low and they got bonus points for having a site running PHP. Also the amount of communication they gave to their players via the Camelot Herald was quite appealing.

So I'm certainly open to playing another Mythic game. It sounds like Warhammer is a nice game and I can only hope that in the long run they don't screw it up so bad that they need to roll out 'Classic' servers :)

Agreed -- for all the pitfalls the latter portion of Dark Age of Camelot had in terms of PvE content, the game was initially an amazing group PvP game. If Warhammer Online contains that same "magic," if you will, that DAoC had early on, it should do very well -- especially considering the sheer number of people playing MMOs today compared to 6 years ago.

No offense to none Wowers, but this is just going to be another failed attempt at taking the head of the class of MMORPG. It is going to take something unbelievable to be the new Wow and this just isnt it. But ill check it out for sure, maybe itll prove me wrong! :)

There hasnt been any serious/noteworthy attempts at overtaking WoW. This game, if it delivers, will be WoW, but twice as good.

I've been with Mythic since Dark Age of Camelot and they set the trend for RvR. My husband and I have played practically every MMORPG out there as I am a member of the International Game Developers Association and even get info on games in the alpha/beta stage before hand. I am currently beta testing WAR as well. In my opinion, with the amount of adult fans that Mythic had attracted with DAOC, this game will top WoW, maybe not in numbers because WoW attracted a lot of the younger generation, but even the adults who didn't play WoW and stuck with DAOC are moving over to WAR. I say let the younger KIDS stay with WoW and the adults will claim WAR.

I don't this game defeat WOW. I am sure quite a few people will run to the Warhammer but it still doesn't have the aspects of WOW that give it the mass appeal that make it so successful.
I do think Warhammer does have the potential to be successful, but I don't think Blizzard has anything to worry about. :)

Ok, after a long line of MMO games, I have seen them all. Many are mildly successful at most. WoW, EQ, DAoC, Lineage 1 & 2, are all among the top dogs. Others are out there.

With the mass appeal going towards WoW, it is due to 3 reasons. Ease of play, as in most classes do not take the players real skill into account, all the time. The game relies heavily on the class abilites rather then skill from the person actually playing. Unlike DAoC who's abilites have many pre-requisites, such as:
    - position requirements on nearly every style attack
    - Different abilites used constantly when you block parry or dodge
    - Different abilites used constantly when your opponent dodges. blocks, or parries.
DAoC has a multitude of Classes, Races, and specializations
RvR > PvP, many instanced places for PvP as well as HUGE areas between each realm making several areas an open world battleground. Keeps that YOUR guild claims, making RvR a team sport so to say.

The second reason, is beacause WarCraft had a history that tons of people were familiar with, from books to comics, and it's ever popular strategy series. Blizzard has made great games in the past, with a very bright future on its Horizon, it makes WoW sales a breeze.

The third reason is the graphics...This game is so easy on systems I can play it on almost anything 1999 and newer. I had at one time a pent 3 with 512 ram, and a nvidia 5200 128 card. Played just fine lol. With the games ease on system requirements it makes sales again that much easier.

Blizzard has done a great service by developing WoW. However, it has its mistakes and issues that they refuse to fix or address. Some they address and they ruin the games balance further.
Tough to balance Magic with Armor and Weapons With Magic. Armor and weapons existed in the real world it is something tangible that we all can realate to, test out, theorize, and make believable.
Magic on the other hand, did not exist, does not exist, and is, when realated to a PvP game, hard to make beleivable and balanced.

It seems that Mythic, learning from its own PvP balance issues with DAoC, and having prior experience and more importantly a fairly successful track record as one of the longest running MMO's, and now EA's huge backing, have the potential to make a great game out of WARHAMMER ONLINE.

They, unlike Blizzard, Sony, and others in the past, have gone so far as to close the games first stages of Beta due to feedback from it's player testing base. They are tryign to create a game the PLAYERS want to play, not one that you play thier way 100%. By takign the players wants and needs into heavy consideration, they will set themselves up for an early success with WAR. Of course, you can not please everyone.

With the return to RvR, the racial wars will be steamed with hatred, and anyone with even a basic knowledge of the WARHAMMER world will be ready to slay thier opposition, based on this alone.

Finally a game where the PvE and PvP meet head on and unite. This game will bring utter chaos to the MMO world. There is room for WoW and WARHAMMER both in this genre. There are so many things to list that are great about both games, and we can argue until doomsday. Bottom line is, it will come down to you, what kind of game do you want to play? Ez mode play where you fall asleep at your keyboard becuase you have done the same thing 1000 times, or the adrenaline filled RvR, constant changing PvP world of WAR. They have done what others including themselves in the past have not. Found what may possibly be the soultion to balanced PvP, as well as a real reason for doing PvE.

Im sure I will be flamed heavily for this post, bust as a long time player of WoW (from its beginning) its time for a change. I have full faith thta Mythic and EA will pull this game off more than semi-succesfully.

It may not reach the 9 million sub mark, but I guarantee it will pull a minimum ofr 1/3 of WoWs population within its first year of launch. Also Mythic being more actively progressive with expansions, I am sure will take note of one of Blizzard's strongest points, FREE CONTENT.

If Mythic leaves WAR with only 7 playable races, they MUST make sure that those races are so heavily customizable that not everyone running around at high or low level looks like twins. Also take into consideration, we will not see another new expansion from WoW for at least another year... Thats alot of dead time, if WAR launches by summer, you will see a fast decline in WoW population for about 6 months. People will leave thier accounts active due to the arena and not wanting to fall behind in points.
Also with the heavy hitters who must fill thier roles as the bastions of boredome and redundancy known as PvE.

    Make the battles meaningful
Make the PvE world change, & intertwine with the PvP world
be heavy on customization of every aspect of the game
keep it real, keep it balanced from the start
and DONT fix it when its not broken.

Do these above things in ANY game and maintain them and it will dethrone anything out there to date.

i've been playing WoW since it came out and im sick and tired of it i've stopped and started my account so much , because i haven't found a game i can enjoy any more. so i go back to my friends and thats about the only reason i get on now is to talk and hang with them. i guess asheron's call dark majesty spoiled me in a way with allowing me to control my growth in the game.

with WoW you have 3 routes to take and out of those three trees the one they want you play the most is the one you find all the gear for. i am really sick n tired of companies telling me what i have to be in a game that i pay for . what i am hoping and what my friends are waiting for is a game that gives us more control over our chars growth in the game, so that way not every one is a clone of someone else.

i have played DaoC and had 2 capped toons a necro and a warden was on the co op server but also had a elf NS on mlf and i did fall in love with the pvp in that game i loved taking keeps , and warhammer having is a big huge thing for me, even more so the group of friends i have are wanting a good worth while pvp events and keeps are a big one.

now another thing that i was spoiled on was the ease of getting around in AC:DM portals where awesome so i hope that its not a pain to get around in the game, hoping they put in some type of game mount if not i hope there are things to kill along that way to where i am going so i don't mind as much, also having a house to store and hang trophies in is sweet to have , had me a nice house in daoc and con merch's was a nice thing to have, better then any AH imo .

My daughter & I both "won" sign-ups for Warhammer beta testing at Origins 2007, both signed up for the testing, and neither of us has ever been contacted since by EA except to receive their newsletters. I have to say that we're both disappointed, as is my son who actually played the on-site demo at Origins and enjoyed it immensely.

Considering the fact that EA couldn't be bothered to honor our "prize claims," I doubt we'll be able to be bothered to invest in their product. Instead, I think we'll stick to WoW, where for all the issues, at least we know we'll get to play and that our concerns will be addressed... eventually.
